This 1962 Volvo PV 544 Sport is owned by Bill and Bernice Clark of Springfield, Vermont.

Several years ago, my wife, Bernice, and I went on a car tour with the Mountain Slowspokes. My father-in-law, Richard Hurd, offered us the use of his 1957 Nash Metropolitan. After the tour I said to Bernice, “That was so much fun. I want to get my own antique car!” This began our venture into the realm of finding the right car. I have owned several great cars, but those have turned out to be daily drivers. These include a brand new 1968 Volkswagen Beetle, a 1969 Dodge Charger, a 1969 Opel Gt, a 1967 Impala Sport Coupe, and a 1961 Plymouth Valiant, which I called “Humpty Dumpty” because I did some repairs and never got it back together again! I do like Volvo cars, especially the older ones. They are called “Swedish Tanks” because they are well made and tough. I first saw a 544 in Arizona, but it was much too expensive. Then I looked at one in Massachusetts, but walked away from that one. Finally, I saw a Hemmings ad for one in Michigan. That one I bought and I trailered it back to Vermont.

A very interesting story about this car is it was featured in a movie, “The Nutty Professor II, the Klumps” starring Eddie Murphy as Professor Klump. It was his car in the movie. It’s fun to see my car on the big screen. We have owned the car for about five years and are enjoying the frequent drives and tours around the northeast. The car had been restored and a B-20 engine with overdrive was added before we acquired it. It’s pretty peppy! We’ve made several improvements like a new interior, electronic ignition, and Abarth stainless steel exhaust system along with the usual needed upkeep. It’s a fun ride and gets a lot of attention since they are somewhat scarce.
Besides being members of VAE, we belong to Yesteryears Motor Car Club, the Volvo Club of America, as well as Mountain Slowspokes. More adventures are ahead I’m sure.
