Hoping for a Comeback

Volunteers Needed!

Seems like every time you pick up a newspaper, scan the internet, or listen to the news, you read or hear that something is closing. Many churches, clubs, restaurants, stores, organizations of all sorts have run out of members and money. One of the biggest reasons for closing many times is there is not anyone to continue the work. This includes both paid help and volunteers.

Several restaurants in the area shortened hours or gave up all together for lack of help. Last year the church I had attended for over 40 years had two members left (I was one!) so the doors closed and the building sold.

It seems that what help is there is on the “older” side, and I have had many discussions about what a place will do when the senior crowd is no longer here or just cannot help anymore. This brings me to Easter Sunday and what happened that has brought me a “ray of hope.”

A few weeks ago, Gary and I ran into a friend that is a member of the Elks Lodge in Derby. He was saying that the Elks have been known for its good works for the community for many years, such as Thanksgiving,

Christmas and Easter meals for those alone and/or in need. They never ask for payment, but if you are able, you can donate toward the meal. He said that they have talked about having to change or do away with the meals all together because the members are getting on in years and there are few and fewer helpers. Gary and I have never been to one of their meals, so we decided to go on Easter. Here is the hope part:

They served 600 meals that day. and for the first time in several years, they had almost too much help. It seems that when one club at the high school heard of the need, several clubs showed up. The ROTC served the food and waited on anyone in need of assistance. It did my heart good to see all these young people scooting around serving, picking up, etc.

This gives me hope for us at the VAE.

We need your help putting on the 69th Vermont Antique & Classic Car Meet

Volunteers

The 69th Annual Vermont Antique & Classic Car Meet

is coming soon… August 7-9. It’s an all-hands-on-deck venture. We start building out the field the week before, and it takes many people to do that.

Every year we get a little older, so we need more of YOU to step up and give a little of your time and energy.  Below is a list of just some of the jobs that we need people power for.

Remember, this show doesn’t put itself on. So if you can devote a little or a lot of time to setup, maintenance, day-of-show duties, teardown, please reach out to Nancy Olney who is coordinating the volunteers. She can be reached at nolney27_@hotmail.com or call her at 802-873-3552. You don’t have to commit to a full day or many days. It can be as little as an hour or two on one day or maybe a couple different days. Please give a little of your time, talent and energy to putting on a successful event this year.

  • TENTS NEED TO BE SET UP. We need a crew of strong, able-bodied people to get them reaching for the sky.
  • STAKES NEED TO BE POUNDED INTO THE EARTH for the show fencing.
  • SIGNS NEED TO BE PLACED all over the field directing cars and people where to go (please, nicely, that is).
  • NUMBER PLACARDS NEED TO BE ATTACHED to the roping designating show car placement.
  • SHOW FLYERS need to be handed out to the spectators as they drive in. This could be as little as an hour or two once or twice a day.
